What is Alp Arslan?
In 1071 AD, Alp Arslan, the Egyptian Sultan, led an army of soldiers into battle against the Roman army of Charles the Hammer.
This battle of Manzikert, on the Armenian Plateau, was a decisive victory for the Turks, and it marked the end of the third Crusade.
Charles the Hammer, also known as Carloman of France, led the third Crusade against the Turks, which resulted in heavy casualties and worsened relations between Pope Urban II and Charles.
After the battle, the Byzantine Emperor Alexius Comnenus promised to make Charles the Hammer a Byzantine Caesar, but the Pope blocked it and excommunicated Charles. Charles went into hiding and eventually became the ruler of Burgundy.
The Battle of Manzikert is notable for partly avenging deaths of the Crusaders at the Siege of Antioch in 1097, and for ending the third Crusade.
